Silicon Carbide

Silicon carbide is an inorganic substance with chemical formula of SiC, usually made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips and other raw materials in a resistance furnace at high temperature smelting. It has two basic varieties of black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, both belonging to α-SiC. Silicon carbide has a high hardness (Mohs hardness > 9), among which, the hardness of green silicon carbide is close to diamond. High hardness and strength, as well as high temperature stability, chemical stability, low thermal expansion coefficient make silicon carbide become one of the ideal materials for grinding, cutting and polishing, widely used in non-ferrous materials grinding, hard and ductile materials finishing, ceramic parts filling and so on. In addition, because of its excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, silicon carbide is also widely used in the production of semiconductors and electronic devices. Moreover, the ideal properties also make it used in a variety of industries, such as refractory, ballistic panels and bulletproof vests and ceramic industries.

Types of Silicon Carbide

There are usually two types of silicon carbide:

  • Black Silicon Carbide: Black silicon carbide contains about 95% SiC. It is sharp and fragile, also has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion rate. The abrasives made from it are very suitable for grinding cast iron and non-ferrous metals, polishing rocks, leather, rubber and so on. It is also widely used in refractory and metallurgical materials.
  • Green Silicon Carbide: Green silicon carbide contains more than 97% SiC, and the purity is higher than that of black silicon carbide. It has excellent grinding and polishing properties and good self-sharpening, mostly used for processing cemented carbide, titanium alloy and optical glass, but also used for honing cylinder liner and fine grinding high-speed steel tools.
