To overcome the problem, the polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is used to replace single crystal diamond in some conditions. There are two kinds of natural PCD in nature, Carbonado and Ballas. Carbonado is a kind of massive PCD formed by many fine diamond and other materials, which is also called black diamond before a long time ago. Balas is shaped like a ball with a hard shell made of radial diamonds. However, there are few of them in nature. Fortunately, synthetic polycrystalline diamonds are common at present, and the synthetic polycrystalline diamond is sintered under high pressure and high temperature conditions with diamond as the skeleton material and binder as the bonding material. Due to its excellent hardness and good wear resistance, PCD is widely used in cutting tools, drawing die and other fields.
The Properties of PCD
- High hardness and wear resistance: The hardness of PCD is up to about 10000HV, which is the hardest man-made material in the world at present. Due to its high hardness and isotropy, PCD has excellent wear resistance.
- Low friction coefficient: The friction coefficient of PCD is lower than that of other materials, The friction coefficient of PCD is about 1/2 of that of cemented carbide.
- High thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of PCD is very high, even better than silver and copper, so the cutting heat is easy to disperse in the cutting process.
- High machining accuracy: Due to the low thermal expansion coefficient and high elastic modulus of PCD tool, the tool is not easy to deform in the cutting process and can keep its original parameters and sharp, resulting the high cutting precision.
